ART HISTORIAN

Everyone is already an artist, whether they realize it or not. We are all creative people; it just doesn't always come out of us in the form of visual art. Some people are singers, dancers, actors, storytellers, writers, chefs, or instrumental musicians. We all make aesthetic, creative decisions each and every day, from deciding what to wear in the morning to choosing what to cook for dinner. Everyone creates in some way, shape, or form!

Even if you don't grow up to become a visual artist, having experience in art will help you in your future career. In Art class, we are solving problems every single day! One of the things that employers are looking for is a person who is flexible, creative, and has the ability to work together on a team!

Art makes you smarter! When you are creating art, you are exercising parts of your brain that don't get exercised in other classes.

You are also learning life skills in Art class, such as how to work with others and perseverance when things don't work out as planned.

Art classes include skills from every single subject area!

  • We experiment with materials and learn color theory as well as physical properties of matter (SCIENCE).

  • We use MATH skills all the time: we use rulers to measure, we learn about human proportion as well as math vocabulary such as geometric forms (cones, spheres, cylinders, etc.).

  • LANGUAGE: Visual art is all about communication. Georgia O'Keeffe once said that she could say things with color and shape that she couldn't say in any other way. Our vocabulary skills get better every day as we discuss artworks, write about our own thought processes, and read about artists from the past.

  • HISTORY was written from the very beginning with pictures! We can learn about our past and other cultures through Art History; from the tomb paintings of Ancient Egypt to the modern art form of photojournalism.
