SKETCHBOOKS!

Sketchbooks by 7th graders

Today in Art class, 6th and 7th graders worked on sketchbook construction. They folded four 11 x 17 pieces of paper in half and stapled the bundle neatly together. They added one staple at the top (near the edge of the fold), one in the middle, and one at the bottom. They made seven of these bundles, which when placed together made 56 pages for the sketchbook. Then, they folded their poster board cover in half and added one extra fold in the middle to make a trough for gluing the pages. We added glue generously, neatly pressed the cover around the pages, and then used clothes pins as clamps to hold the whole thing together while the glue dried. Students then worked on finishing their original Name Designs on the covers:

They all turned out just as unique and original as the students themselves! Before choosing the final design, the kids had to invent four different designs based on their names. They were encouraged to use the lines in a variety of ways to change the look. Instead of writing the name horizontally, some chose to write it diagonally or vertically! Instead of using plain old lines to write the name, students experimented with curving or zig-zag lines. I admired the fact that many students added personal touches, telling a little bit about themselves within the design. Way to go, 6th and 7th graders!
